Corn, and weeds.
Corn, and weeds.

This is supposed to be corn. At the top of the picture I had planted corn and sunflowers, every other hill, a foot apart. The few rows at the bottom were just corn, planted 18 inches apart.

All the sunflowers are gone. And for some reason in the first planting of corn, only 7 of 15 hills came up. On later plantings with the same seed, almost all hills came up. (my thinking is that if the seed was bad, there would be fewer stalks everywhere. So far either all the seeds in a hill come up or none of them do)

I did find one place where it looked like the corn stalk had gotten a few inches high and died, but I only found one of those.

I did get more corn planted but I hadn't looked at my notes before I did. My early planting from today will be ready the day after one of my earlier plantings. I try to space them about a week apart but when the corn is ready seems to have as much to do with the weather as the ready date.

So my plan is to be in the garden every other hour or so as long as I am home and it is not raining. If I sit down and pull the weeds, it takes over an hour to do one row. Hoeing goes faster but the weeds just come back later.
