Five wheel barrel loads of blackberry stalks. Mostly dead ones.

If that is what it takes every year or two, raising blackberries is going to be a lot of work. I will have to read up on how long a stalk lasts vs the stalks for raspberries.

I waited until mid-June so that I could see which stalks were coming back and which were not. Some stalks that had looked dead earlier in the season did put out leaves on the lower part of some stalks. I suppose that is another thing I should watch. Did any of those partial stalks produce any fruit?

Last year I had kind of let the blackberry area grow because I wanted to transplant some berries and extend the garden. I wouldn't have needed to do that, these things seem to put out new bushes every week somewhere in the garden.

I did transplant some berries after I was done with this pruning. I have put steel fence posts up to tie the berries too and I transplanted berries where there was none. Most of the transplanted ones took.

Once I was done with all that, I took the yard stick out and cleared the area so there was a <> three foot area to walk between my blue berries and these black berries. That was likely another wheel barrel load or two. I was also weeding the area by then so these loads were not just blackberry stalks.
