Picture: Sept sweet corn.
If the corn was ready a few days ago, it was right on time for 65 day corn. Usually I don't plant corn that will be ready after Labor Day weekend. Days are getting too short and there is a chance of frost. But this year I had lots of space left and the corn seed is getting old so I want to use it up.
IF we had rain or we were around to water the corn on a regular basis, we'd have likely eaten twice as much corn. But a few days at 90+ degrees in this soil and the corn is stressed.
And ... worms. I've never had an issue with worms before. This year, starting with this and then the next planting, there were worms. Tequila corn I call it. A worm in every earn. And the silks are gone before they dry out.
Silks are another thing about the corn this year. My way of telling if the corn is ready is if the silks have dried. Not this year. Silks can be fresh and the cob small and it is still ready. That was another reason we missed out on a bunch of corn.
