Picture: Clipping the corn for the compost pile.

Mid September and it still has not froze. Still watering when we are in town. And in the background of this picture you can see my onion chives and weeds/flowers blooming in the background.

I try to clip my corn soon after I pick the ears. It makes in easier to find the remaining ears and leaves more water in the soil. This year the squirrels did not do as much damage to the corn, nor did the deer or the wind. If only we had had some water.

Not have having water really cut down on the corn we ate this year. The first corn was weeks late and something had 're-located' a bunch of the seeds so it was a poor stand of corn in my garden. But corn did come up various other places in my yard later in the season.

And because the lack of water, all plantings did not mature at their normal rate depending on when it rained. A few plantings I didn't get any corn from because it wasn't ready when it should have been and we were eating from another planting when it came ready. Also because of lack of rain the ear size was not consistent so some corn was ready but I never looked at it because of the ear size.

The corn we did have was good. Nothing like sweet corn that was picked an hour before you eat it.

Picture: 1st posts for my black berry patch.

The black berries grew good this year. We did see a few berries starting to form but they were gone by the time they should have been ready.

We also still have an apple tree. Usually the apples are small and full of holes. This year they are large and full of holes. I shoveled up what fell on the ground once, but after that something has kept the area clean. Deer?
