Picture - My future butterfly garden.
The weather was nice enough to be outside for a few hours.
In the background area there are three sections. On the left I planted yellow flowers, the center I planted milkweed and on the right I planted flower seeds from this years garden.
Not sure what the 'yellow flowers' are, but they are growing two places on the edge of my garden and the bees really like them. So I just busted off the flower part of the stalk today and broke them into smaller pieces and threw some dirt over them.
The milkweed seeds are from this years milkweed in my yard. When the pods started opening up I picked them and put them in a bucket for now. Today I tried to spread them out and cover them with dirt but it doesn't take much wind to get them going.
The 'flower seeds' I had picked from two types of flowers in my garden. One of them were volunteers from last year so I am pretty sure they will grow. Year after year.
In the three sections closer to the camera, on the left will be tomatoes, center will be lupins and the right is milkweed.
I will be planting something 'flowery' on the left in the future but my tomatoes have been dying mid-season so I wanted to try them in 'new ground' and see if that makes a difference.
The center will be the lupins. they seem to grow like weeds once they get established. I already have the seeds. I will plant some early spring and some late spring and see how it goes.
On the right in the grass are where milkweed has been growing the last few years. This year the ants really did a number on them so my plan is to try to stay ahead of the ants next year. That is part of the reason for partitioning off the areas. The other reason is to have a place to sit to weed.
I think I have enough blocks now. If not I will have to buy more. Where I was getting them, the property will be sold by the next time I could get there.
After i was done planting I went to move some compost with a fork. I stick the fork in and something hits my leg. I never did see it but my guess is There was a rabbit somewhere in the weeds :)
I waited until now to move the compost because there are bees around the pile somewhere. I didn't see any nests when I was moving stuff. It was just a few feet deep in this area, it had been frozen when I tried to move it this spring and then I never got back to it. So now I just piled it on top of the other stuff from last spring.
As long as I had the fork I thought I would try to dig up the carrots but the ground was frozen too hard. Opps.
