I assume it was the squirrels. I've seen damage like this before but it was in the fall when the corn was almost dented. Some years there would be a trail of corn from the garden to the tree trunk.
As soon as I saw this, I put up more fence. I had gotten a six foot fence done on about half of this garden before I started planting. I didn't have time to put up the rest of the new fence so I just hung the fence I took down above the remaining area's where the fence was only four foot high. The only place that isn't six foot now is the gate.
Not sure if that did the trick or not but there hasn't been anymore corn knocked down in that garden.
But a couple of days later my wife was sitting out in the yard near where I was weeding and she saw corn wiggling in the other garden. First she thought it was the birds she could see over there. But then she saw a stalk come down so she went over, it was a squirrel. She chased it away.
A few minutes later, the same thing again. Likely the same squirrel. And that corn didn't have ears or even tassels on it yet. But that was it. No more damage in either garden.
